Confirmed Train Tickets, No Seats: Women Claim Railway Helpline Failed to Help
A viral video from the Garba Superfast Express shows women with four confirmed tickets allegedly unable to access their seats amid overcrowding. Despite contacting railway helpline 139, they claim no assistance arrived.
Anshi, who was travelling with her companions from Agra in Uttar Pradesh to Kota in Rajasthan, complained to the railway helpline after finding that they could not access their reserved seats due to overcrowding. The women were travelling on train number 12938, the Garba Superfast Express.
When Anshi contacted the railway helpline, she was asked to provide her PNR and other details, as is customary. She was then told to wait for further action. Meanwhile, the passenger also called the railway helpline number 139.
As the complaint progressed, Anshi received a WhatsApp message asking her to wait. In response, she wrote that she had already been waiting for two hours.
The video does not mention whether the Railways eventually took any action or resolved the issue. However, in the caption accompanying the video, Anshi claims that no assistance was provided by the Railways.
According to Anshi, the group had four confirmed seats in the train. Despite having reserved tickets, the women were unable to sit on their allotted seats because passengers had allegedly turned the sleeper coach into a general compartment by occupying the reserved space.
Anshi also highlighted the safety concerns faced by women in such circumstances, saying that she and her companions did not feel safe amid the overcrowding.
She further stated that they had contacted the railway helpline at 139 but did not receive any assistance. In the caption, she appealed to people to share the video, highlighting the issue from the perspective of women's safety.
The video has also triggered discussions in the comments section, with some users suggesting that the women should have booked tickets in 3AC instead.
However, such comments appear to justify the presence of passengers travelling with general tickets in sleeper coaches, despite the fact that occupying reserved seats without valid authority is against railway rules and falls under the category of a punishable offence.
One user commented that Rail Madad takes three days to resolve such complaints. Most users have been tagging the Railways in the comments, demanding action over the incident.
The video has brought attention to the difficulties faced by passengers with confirmed reservations when overcrowding prevents them from accessing their allotted seats, as well as the concerns raised over the response to complaints made through railway helplines.
